The Way Forward: Learning from international experience of TEYL
Call for papers
The conference will be organized around a series of case studies which present a description and analysis of state school provision for Teaching English to Young Learners in individual countries. These case studies will be selected to represent 4 regions as follows: Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas ( South and North). There will also be a number of parallel sessions interspersed with the case studies which will provide an opportunity for presentations of interesting innovations or small scale projects in the area of Teaching English to Young Learners which could represent work in either the private or state school sector.
Proposals are invited in the following two areas:
A. Country Case Study
Analytical Case studies conducted in state school contexts with programmes for Teaching English to Young Learner, particularly those based on some empirical research. In the interests of comparison across varied country contexts, presenters are asked to provide summary information on the following and address some or all of these aspects in depth.
Suggested Main Parameters or questions for case study presenters to address in their case studies
Rationale: Why did your country decide to introduce English at primary school (early)? What influenced the decision?
What and How What are the main aims/objectives of the programme and through what means has your country tried to achieve them ? How appropriate do you feel the approach/methods adopted have been for implementing TEYL from a theoretical and a contextual perspective?
Outcomes: What do you expect children to be able to do by the end of the TEYL primary school programme? (more positive attitudes, more cultural awareness, able to communicate orally, pass an exametc ) How far have the objectives been achieved ? What is the evidence? How far have the effects of the TEYL programme been evident at secondary school?
Transition: How has the transition between primary and secondary been handled?
Benefits: What, in your view, have been the main tangible benefits of the TEYL programme? Give examples
Constraints: What have been the main constraints/obstacles in trying to achieve the aims for the TEYL programme? Give examples
Suggested Mode for Case Study Presentation: 1 hour Talk using OHP or powerpoint presentation with 30 minutes for discussion
B. Innovations/ Experiments
Presentations are invited which describe or show interesting small scale experiments, innovations or projects in the field of Teaching English to Young Learners, which have not been implemented nationally. These could be in one of the following areas:
- Teacher Training
- Training of YL Trainers
- YL Assessment
- Pedagogy/ Teaching approaches
- Curriculum
- Materials Design (including IT)
Mode of Presentation
The following modes are available:
- Practical Workshop ( 55minutes )
- Talk ( 40 minutes with 10 minutes for questions)
Proposals can be submitted by mail, fax or email using the form below. They will be considered by the conference committee.

Notices of Acceptance will be sent by 28th September. Once the submission has been accepted all case study presenters are required to send an electronic copy of the full paper by November 30th. Please inform us if sponsorship is dependent on acceptance so that we can deal with your proposal speedily.
Sponsorship for Presenters: Limited funds are available to help some presenters from developing countries with travel or accommodation but please try to find other sources of funding/sponsorship or local British Council office, wherever possible.
Publication: If you wish your paper to be considered for inclusion in the Conference Proceedings, please submit a summary of no more than 2000 words for case study presenters and 1, 500 for other presenters by January 30th, 2008 to jayne [dot] moon [at] virgin [dot] net as a Microsoft Word file with a “.doc” extension. If this is not possible, save as a Rich Text File (.rtf extension).
Note: All presenters and co-presenters must register and pay to attend the conference.
